Margaret Rose Whitmore

Beloved Nan

15 March 19388 January 2024

She filled every room with warmth, and every life she touched with grace.

Life Story

Margaret Rose Whitmore was born on the 15th of March, 1938, in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, the youngest daughter of Edward and Dorothy Whitmore. She grew up in a household that valued kindness above all else — a value she carried with her, quietly and without fuss, for the entirety of her eighty-five years. After leaving school at sixteen, Margaret trained as a seamstress and worked at a tailoring house in Leeds where she met her future husband, Thomas, at a tea dance on a rainy Thursday evening in October 1961. They married the following spring and settled in Headingley, where they would raise three children together: Robert, Susan, and little James. Margaret was a woman of enormous creativity. The house was always warm with the smell of something baking, the walls adorned with her needlework and the shelves filled with the books she read voraciously throughout her life. She had a particular love for the garden — her roses were the pride of the street — and for the Yorkshire Dales, where the family spent countless weekends walking the fells. She was a cornerstone of her local community, volunteering at the church hall, organising the village fête for over twenty years, and serving meals at the food bank well into her seventies. She did these things not for recognition, but because it would never have occurred to her not to. Thomas passed away in 2011, and Margaret faced those years with the same quiet dignity she had brought to every challenge in her life. She found joy in her grandchildren — all seven of them — and in the small rituals that gave her days their shape: the morning crossword, afternoon tea at half past three, and the evening news. She passed peacefully at Leeds General Infirmary on the 8th of January, 2024, with Susan and Robert at her bedside. She is deeply missed, and will be, for a very long time.

Mum, there is not a day that goes by that I don't hear your voice telling me to put the kettle on. You gave us everything — your warmth, your patience, your ridiculous optimism about the weather. The house feels quieter without you, but you are in every corner of it. Every rose that blooms this summer will be for you. With all my love.

She was the kind of person who made you feel that everything was going to be alright, even when it wasn't. That's a rare gift. I'm so proud to have been her son.

Margaret and I met at a WI meeting in 1983 and were inseparable from that afternoon onwards. She had the most wonderful laugh — it started quietly and then just took over the whole room. I already miss her terribly. The Tuesday morning coffee group will never be the same.

Oliver Whitmore

Grandson

Nan taught me to bake shortbread, to always say please and thank you, and that a proper cup of tea fixes most things. She was endlessly patient with me when I was small and endlessly proud of me when I grew up. I will carry her with me every day.

Rev. David Connolly

Vicar, St Michael's Church

Margaret was a cornerstone of our parish for over fifty years. Faithful, generous, and wonderfully no-nonsense. She will be deeply missed by everyone at St Michael's.
